This project was born in the midst of the April 2020 COVID Level Four lockdown in response to the increasing displays of  anti-Chinese racism on social media as well as racist behaviour towards Chinese people living in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In choosing this 2020 poster theme - the project team firstly acknowledges the domestic racism here in Aotearoa New Zealand and the continuing urgent need for institutional and systemic racism suffered by Māori, tangata whenua, since settlement of tauiwi through colonisation, to be recognised as a primary issue for our nation.

Migrant cultures who have settled in Aotearoa New Zealand, who are not of the dominant culture, also have a story that speaks of racism that they have and continue to encounter. The Chinese community is one such community.

We invite you to join us

  • Explore this website and the resources about Chinese Kiwi communities and responding to racism and to encourage others to do so

  • Help us chose the winner of the popular vote category - voting is open from 08 through to 22 October here at this website

  • Create artworks that share the 2020 kaupapa/purpose and enter the competition.

The promotional posters and resources on the competition website aim to empower people and provide Kiwis with strategies for how to stand up and respond when they see other people targeted by anti-racist behaviour.

This project is coordinated by artist Bruce Mahalski and researcher Bev Hong.
